After a decade-long development process, the new terminal of Kish International Airport is scheduled to open on November 23rd, in the presence of the Minister of Roads and Urban Development. This terminal, the third largest in the country, is designed to handle 6 million passengers annually and spans four floors, standing over 31 meters above sea level.
The terminal boasts six-passenger entrance gates, including 5 for incoming passengers and one for bus access, 13 exit gates in the transit hall, and ten telescopic Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBB) for direct boarding. It features an automated Baggage Handling System (BHS), 48 check-in counters, ten escalators, 12 elevators for inter-floor movement, and advanced airport equipment systems. The terminal also has an open parking area with 520 cars in the northern zone.
Spanning a total land area of 25 hectares, the terminal building covers 49,000 square meters, with an engine house infrastructure of 1,865 square meters and a site area of 16 hectares.
With its integrated passenger and cargo handling system, the new terminal ranks the third largest in Iran in capacity and size. Domestic knowledge-based companies were employed to manufacture critical airport equipment for its construction, including the BHS and PBB systems.
The project, initiated in April 2013 by then Executive Vice President Hamid Beqaei, was initially planned to be completed within two years for 113 billion Tomans. However, the project’s completion stretched to around ten years and six months, with costs exceeding 3000 billion Tomans.
As the terminal prepares to commence operations, questions arise about aircraft availability in the country to match the terminal’s high capacity and facilitate the influx and departure of passengers, highlighting the critical role of such infrastructure in developing a tourist area.
